How do I view how many people have visited my site?

For tracking Web site traffice, 23dimensions provides every Web Hosting account with a free install of AWStats.

  1. Go to http://yoursite.com/cpanel. You will be prompted for your username and password. Enter your Web hosting accout username and password.
  2. Click on the Web/FTP Stats icon or link. The Web/FTP Stats page will load in your Web browser. This page has options to view information about visitors, bandwidth, etc. Most of the time, you will be using AWStats.
  3. Click on the AWStats link. The AWStats page will load in your Web browser.
  4. Look at the Summary and Monthly sections of the page. The stat "Unique Visitors" tells you how many people have visited your site for the current month.

Do I need a hit counter?

No, you don't need a counter. (See How do I view how many people have visited my site?) In fact, a hit counter can be misleading, becuase a hit counter tells you how many times a page has loaded, which is different than (and much higher) than the number of people who have actually visited the page. Why? Most visitors see the same page more than once, just by browsing the site. Also, a hit counter would include all the times you've viewed the page. In addition to the hit counter problems per page, a hit counter doesn't tell you about site visitors. A hit counter is per page. To get any good information from a hit counter about your Web site traffic, you would have to add up all the hit counters of all the pages, then figure out which "hits" across pages were by the same visitor and then subtract the duplicate hits.

Isn't there a better way? Yes! Here at 23dimensions we have an industry standard application called AWStats, which tells you the number of hits to your site, across all pages, as well as per page and, the important one, the number of unique visitors to your site. You can use Web/FTP Stats by logging into your site's cPanel.

What is Web Site Hosting (a.k.a Hosting)

"Hosting" is an account that puts the Web site's files online so the Web site is available at an internet address, eg, mysite.com or whatever your address will be. An analogy I like to use is the telephone. A Web site is to a telephone what a hosting account is to a telephone account. You need an account with the phone company for people to call you on your telephone. You need a hosting account for people to reach your Web site. It's where your Web site lives. Your account is a place to copy the Web site files, so they show up on the Internet.

Setup email?

Setting up Email accounts:
  1. NetAdmin (Non-Resellers) (http://YourDomain.com/netadmin)
    1. Go to Netadmin --> My Email Center --> Manage Email Accounts.
    2. Add an email account. This account works for POP3, SMTP, IMAP, and Webmail.
  2. CPanel (Resellers) (http://YourDomain.com/cpanel or through WHM)
    1. CPanel --> Add/Remove email accounts
    2. Add an email account.

Email Client Setup:

Login to email?

First, of course, you must have an email account setup and know your username and password. Then you can login to your webmail account online.

Requirements

  • Email account already setup
  • Username and password

Once you meet the above requirements, login by:

  1. In your Web browser, go to http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail (replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name). A popup will appear requesting your username and password.
  2. In the popup, enter your username and password, and click OK. The Mail Management page will appear in your Web browser.
  3. Here you have two choices of the webmail application you want to use. You can use either one and/or switch back and forth each time you login. Both applications read/save the same email. You will not loose any email by switching applications, so feel free to try one application and then the other. Choose an webmail application by clicking on one of the logos. Personally, I think SquirrelMail is more intuitive, so you might try that one first. So click on one of the logos and you will be ready to email once the application has loaded in your Web browser.
